History
The University G. DAnnunzio inaugurated the first exhibition place of the University Museum in 1994 at the Palazzo De Pasquale. On January 21 1998, at the inauguration of the academic year 1997-1998, the museum was opened to the public at the university campus of Madonna delle Piane. Since March 21 2005 the University Museum of Chieti has been hosted at the Palazzo Arnaldo Mussolini (formerly used by ENAL), situated in the historic center of the city. In 2010, the University Museum reached autonomy and changed its previous title Museum of the History of Biomedical Sciences into University Museum G. DAnnunzio as contemplated in the new statute. The University Museum contributes to characterize the University "G. D'Annunzio" of Chieti with its peculiar specificity as a "place of memory" where exhibition areas are dedicated to the knowledge and the diffusion of Natural Sciences and History of Science. Special attention is paid to biological and medical aspects emerging from archaeological research, medical anthropology and paleontology, and other specific sections devoted to Natural History and History of Science
A specialized library is open to the public and a large storehouse is available for experts. The mission of the University Museum consists in educating and communicating scientific information. For this reason the Museum made a significant effort to make the scientific messages to the visitors easily accessible, in particular encouraging students and publics understanding of technical issues. In 2011, the number of visitors exceeded 13,000 persons. High-level educational courses take place at the Museum, including academic certified courses regarding museography and museum management. Now, the Museum contains more than 14,700 records in its collections including a wide variety of subjects: from Paleontology and Prehistory to Anthropology, Botany and Zoology, but also History of Science with a large series of historical scientific instruments, and naturalistic modern art works recently acquired.
