The University Museum System counts nine years of intense activity in the enhancement of the sizeable historical scientific heritage preserved in its museums as well as in the promotion of scientific culture among the public, especially pupils and students. Since the beginning, the System, both autonomously or in collaboration with other university structures, has been championing exhibitions and events of high historical scientific level and strongly appreciated by the public, on the whole Italian territory as well as abroad. Among them, some are worth quoting: “Einstein Ingegnere dell’universo” (2005), “Golgi Architetto del cervello” (2006), “The Legacy of Volta. From the Battery to Photovoltaic Electricity” (Shanghai, 2006), “Medicine and Life Sciences in Pavia and Bologna: History and Legacy”( Shanghai, 2007), “Dalla terra al cielo. Il laboratorio di Galileo” (2009), “Il contagio vivo. Agostino Bassi nella storia della bachicoltura” (2009), “The Legacy of Volta. From the Battery to Photovoltaic Electricity” (Alessandria d’Egitto, 2009), "Golgi architetto del cervello" revival of the exhibition at the Villa Nobel in Sanremo (Imperia) (2009) with an open forum "Gli arabeschi della vita. Da Camillo Golgi alle frontiere della biologia cellulare e delle neuroscienze" (30 May 2009) with the Nobel prize Gunther Blobel, “MARCONI 09, comunicare senza fili: dai segnali ai suoni” (2009 – 2010), “La scienza in chiaroscuro. Lombroso e Mantegazza a Pavia tra Darwin e Freud” (2010), “Energia questa trasformista. Laboratorio storico interattivo” (2010 - 2011), “Pavia e le svolte della scienza” (2011) (Exhibition for the commemoration of the University of Pavia 650th anniversary), “L’isola che non c’č” (2011), “Boscovich and his time through the Pavia University Library and Museums” (2011), “Non c’era una volta il Personal Computer” (2011 –2012), “Le forme e i colori del pensiero" (2013), “Il baco mangia la foglia. Mostra di bachi vivi sulle tracce della seta a Pavia” (2014).

Thanks to the international relations weaved over the years, the System proposes international events and collaborates in the organization of congresses with experts from all over the world. Examples are the already mentioned exhibitions of Beijing, Shanghai, Alexandria, as well as the congresses connected to the celebrations for Golgi in 2006 - Congress of International Society for the History of the Neurosciences, Congresso della Societą Italiana di Storia della Medicina (with the partecipation of a Nobel prize for Medicine, Torsten Wiesel), Congresso della Societą Italiana di Patologia Generale, Congresso della Societą Italiana di Anatomia -, il Convegno Nazionale sulla Storia della Tecnica Elettrica (2007), the Internation Congress of Cajal Club: “Camillo Golgi and the Modern Neuroscience” (2009), the Congress “IET Institution of Engineering and Technology” (2010), XXXI Convegno SISFA – Societą Italiana Storia della Fisica e dell’Astronomia (2011), “Boscovich 2011” Internation Congress (2011).

Many of the activities above have been realized thanks to contributions from the Ministry of Instruction University and Research, financed by Law 6/2000 for the Diffusion of Scientific Culture, both through annual projects and schedule agreements.

The Museum System successfully participated to calls for financing promoted by the Culture Sector of Lombardy Region for the enhancement of the historical scientific heritage and for the realizations of events. Moreover, it won two calls for financing promoted by Cariplo Foundation (2009 and 2011) for the increase of public in the places of culture.

Some museums of the System collaborated to the MIIUR project “Spring of Science” (from 2004 to 2009), to the project “Science under 18” with the municipality of Pavia, as well as to the European projects “Comunius Map” and STeT (2004 and 2006); the Museum of Natural History participated to the project “EST – Educate to Science and Technology” promoted by Lombardy Region and financed by Cariplo Foundation (from 2007 to 2009). The System has also participated to the project “Scientific Degrees”. The museums for the History of the University (Physics Section), of Natural History, Mineralogy, Electric Technic, Archaeology and the Botanical Garden has participated to “Pathways of knowledge of the city institutions and the local reality” with the project for the schools of the municipality of Pavia “Active citizenship: for the knowledge, promotion and practice of children’s rights”.

Among the activities for didactics the SMA has always collaborated with C.OR, Service Centre of the University, founded among the initiatives for the right to education, during the displays “Info Day” and “Open Doors” with its own stand and guided tours to the museums.

Since its foundation the System has had the world of school as privileged interlocutor, realizing projects that could involve all actors connected in a network – institutions, teachers, students.
